5 YEARS IMPRISONMENT FOR FELON IN POSSESSION OF A FIREARM

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Jarrod Cole, 28, of Providence, R.I., was sentenced Friday by U.S. District Court Judge William E. Smith to five years imprisonment and three years supervised release for being a felon in possession of a firearm, it was announced by United States Attorney Peter F. Neronha.

The defendant, who had previously been convicted of a felony, was indicted on one count of a Felon in Possession of a Firearm on June 17, 2009. The defendant entered a not guilty plea at arraignment on June 22, 2009, before Magistrate Judge David L. Martin. Cole changed his plea to guilty at a hearing on October 28, 2009.

On April 30, 2009, members of the Providence Police Department Violent Crimes Task Force received information that the defendant would be in the vicinity of Elmwood Avenue in Providence armed with a firearm and traveling as a passenger in a gold colored Hyundai. Officers located the vehicle and observed Cole standing next to it, and seized a loaded .357 caliber revolver. The defendant was immediately arrested.     

The matter was investigated by Providence Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard W. Rose.
